How can positivity and optimism be wielded as tools for change? The 7th annual Conference on Gender and International Affairs endeavors to answer that question as it continues the tradition of advocating for the integration of gender and intersectional analysis throughout our studies and work.
Using the lens of this year’s theme, Radical Optimism: Transforming Positivity into Power, CGIA will underscore the ways marginalized folks have harnessed power through positivity to continue to push for progress, such as supporting feminist economics, healing from gender-based violence, and celebrating diverse sexual and gender identities across borders. The Conference seeks to create an environment where participants will have the opportunity to draw from collaborative discussions throughout the event in order to foster progressive change in their work following the Conference.
Ginn Library is currently displaying an extensive collection of books providing a crash course in gender and intersectional analysis. Check out Women and Wars: Contested Histories, Uncertain Futures, edited by CGIA panelist Dr. Carol Cohn and featuring writing by Fletcher Professor Dyan Mazurana, for a look into women’s often overlooked experiences and participation in wars. Cynthia Enloe’s Bananas, Beaches, and Bases: Making Feminist Sense of International Politics is crucial to understanding of the gendered nature of international relations. To dig deeper into the ways in which mainstream feminism has often failed to include and represent marginalized populations, Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall is an essential text.
