Hosted with Fletcher’s own Dr. Paul Berkman and Dr. Julie Berkman from Our Spaces organization, the event started with a story about Professor Berkman’s adventures in Antarctica. Kids learned about Antarctica’s climate and what types of animals can survive in such a harsh environment. Kids were fascinated about ice and how “anchor ice makes crystals like little potato chips.” The program closed with kids making flags for Antarctica which will be proudly displayed at McMurdo Station.
Antarctica Day marks the anniversary of the 1959 Antarctica Treaty in which 12 nations signed to preserve 10% of the earth “forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes in the interest of mankind.” To date 53 parties are now involved in the Treaty, an unprecedented beacon of international cooperation.
