General

What precautions are you taking to protect library users and staff and minimize the risk of infection?

  • In order to enter the library, Fletcher students must be part of Tufts’ COVID-19 testing program, show the results of their daily COVID-19 screening upon entering the library, and abide by all library rules designed to mitigate the risk of coronavirus transmission.
  • Library staff are following all state, municipal, and university health guidelines, including social distancing, wearing masks, frequent hand-washing and sanitizing, disinfecting workspaces, and self-monitoring for symptoms.
  • The Mugar, Cabot, and Goddard buildings where the library is located have been reviewed by Tufts Facilities to confirm that HVAC and air systems are fully operational and meet standards for capturing airborne viruses.

What’s new for the Fall 2020 semester?

  • Limited hours and access: View our current opening hours. Starting in the Fall, Ginn Library will be a Fletcher-only space: tap your Tufts ID at the door to enter. In addition, many uses of the library will require a reservation. Read more about using the library space.
  • Remote-only reference consultations: use the Ask a Librarian portal to ask a question online or schedule a Zoom call with a librarian for in-depth research help.
  • Contactless pickup: Fletcher faculty, staff, and students can request books online for quick pickup in the Ginn Library lobby.
  • Self-checkout: New machines in the Ginn Library lobby will allow you to check out books to yourself. This service is not yet available as of early September but will be coming soon. In the meantime, please use the contactless pickup requesting process to check out books.
  • Online course reserves: The library has acquired electronic versions of course reserve books whenever possible. Print lending from the Reserve collection is not currently available.
  • Physical item returns: Overdue fines have been suspended, recalling items through the catalog has been disabled, and due dates for books checked out prior to the library’s closure in March have been extended to November 1. Learn how to return books this Fall.

Who should I contact with questions about the reservation system?

Many of your questions will be answered on our Use the Library Space page. For further questions about the seat and space reservation system, contact Library Assistant Lori Zimmermann (Lori.Zimmermann@tufts.edu).

Can Fletcher students study in Tisch Library?

No--for the Fall 2020 semester, entrance to Tisch Library is limited to students in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering. (See below for how to borrow Tisch books.)

What can I do at the circulation desk?

  • Ask questions. (You can also do this online through the Ask a Librarian portal.)
  • Ask staff to help locate books by call number and location in the library. (You can also look up call numbers in the library catalog, and review the library’s floor plan online.)
  • Ask staff how to get to the seat you’ve reserved. (There will also be a copy of the seats map at the library entrance to help you find your way.)

What can’t I do at the circulation desk?

  • Check out or return books. See our Borrow Print Books page for how this process has changed.
  • Check out technology.
  • Use office supplies.

How do I borrow technology?

Hourly circulation of technology items will not be available in the Fall. Please remember to bring your own chargers with you if you visit campus.

How should I clean/disinfect my library books?

Please do not use any cleaning products on library books, as this will damage the books. The best way to disinfect books you’ve checked out is to let them sit, untouched, for 72 hours before you use them.

I'm a Fletcher student, and I need a book that's in Tisch Library. How do I get it?

Place a request through the library catalog, and you’ll be able to pick the book up at Ginn in a few days.

I’m not a Fletcher student, but I need a book that’s in Ginn. How do I get it?

Place a request through the library catalog, and you’ll be able to pick the book up at your home library. (For undergraduates, this is Tisch Library.)

Research and Writing Help

How do I consult a reference librarian?

Our library staff remains happy to answer your research questions virtually. Use the Ask a Librarian portal for help with your research projects, if you have trouble accessing online resources, and to schedule a virtual meeting via Zoom with a research librarian. Library workshops will be moving online, and you will receive instructions prior to the session on how to connect. How do I meet with a writing tutor?

The Writing Center is here to help online. Schedule an appointment online with a Writing Center tutor. One of our tutors will send you an email at or near the beginning of the scheduled appointment with an invitation for a Zoom online meeting. Have a digital version of your paper to share with the tutor, and you will use Zoom to review it. Please contact Writing Center director Frank Sobchak at Frank.Sobchak@tufts.edu with questions.

Electronic Resources

What electronic resources are available to Fletcher students?

The library’s collection of databases, electronic journals, ebooks, and digitized primary sources is available remotely to Tufts students, faculty, and staff from anywhere in the world.

JumboSearch, Ginn Library’s databases (including Bloomberg), and Research Guides are available from off-campus. When you’re off-campus, you will need to sign in with your Tufts username and password, unless you use the Tufts VPN AnyConnect application.

How do I use the Data Lab?

The Data Lab at Tufts offers learning resources, virtual support, and an online workshop series open to Fletcher students on topics like R, Python, QGIS, STATA, and more. You can also view recordings of past workshops, or sign up for advanced one-on-one consultations and specialty services with Data Lab staff. All lab assistant support and Data Lab staff consultations will be remote through the fall 2020 semester.

How do I get Stata on my computer?

Effective August 1, 2020, a Stata SE software license – the integrated statistical software package used for data analytics, data management, and graphics – is available for all faculty, staff, and students, no matter where you are. The new enterprise licensing enables the community to use the software by installing it on your local machine (Tufts-owned or personal), by connecting to the TTS Virtual Lab, or when in a computer lab on campus.

How do I use other specialized software on my computer?

Log into the Fletcher Remote Lab from your personal computer by downloading the VMWare Horizon Client. This program will allow you to use Stata, SPSS, ArcGIS, and other specialized software programs, just as you would at an on-campus computer lab.

Where do I go for help troubleshooting technology issues?
